Byron Bay

January 26, 2016

I recently spent a week in Byron Bay and the food scene there is so good! They are really focused on locally sourced, great quality ingredients. They also have a lot of healthy, nutritious cafes with really unusual dishes I haven’t seen anywhere before. Listed below are some of my favourite places we found!

Fleet

This restaurant in in Brunswick heads, about 20 minute drive from Byron Bay and it has incredible reviews. We were very lucky to get a seat at their Ochota Barrels Wine dinner as other than those 2 spots they were fully booked out for 2 months!! It is such a cute, intimate restaurant run by Astrid at front of house and her husband Josh as head chef. There is one large slab of granite that makes up a long dining table/ bar so everyone is sitting around the one are and is speaking directly to Astrid and Josh in the kitchen.

The dinner we had was a set tasting menu with matching wines and everything was so fresh and amazing. The prawns used in one of the courses had been caught at 2pm that very day! They had sardines that Josh had pickled 6 weeks prior just for this dinner. They made their own bread and house made butter. Every single detail was so thought out and exceptionally executed that it was one of the best meals I have even had in my life! I cannot reccommend this place enough and I will definitely be back again!

Roadhouse Cafe

This is a great cafe by day that does an amazing breakfast and lunch menu but by night it turns into a little whiskey bar serving over 500 types of Whiskey. It has a strong focus on local nutritious foods and has plenty of wholesome healthy options.

Byron Fresh Cafe

This cafe is right by the beach and does great food all day. During dinner service there is always live music outside and it has a really great atmosphere. Great coffee and pastries too.

Dip Cafe

This cafe is great for some good wholesome breakfasts and lunches. The sweetcorn fritters are amazing, also the haloumi stack as shown in the photo! Great value for money and good size portions, They have a great all day breakfast menu too.

The Three Blue Ducks at The Farm

The Three Blue Ducks have an amazing cafe in Bronte which Ive been to a few times. They also have a place at the farm in Byron Bay and it is amazing! They raise livestock, grow crops and try to make all their dishes with ingredients grown right their on their land. There is also a great bakery there; The Bread Social, a florist and a gourmet deli.

They run regular courses (a beekeeping one was on when we were there) and have yoga sessions so it’s definitely a must visit!

Harvest Cafe

Harvest Cafe is a little outside Byron Bay in a tiny town called Newrybar. We had a delicious cheeseboard there and some cocktails but the dinner menu also looked amazing. They have the cutest deli next door selling gourmet cheeses, fresh bread and condiments & treats. Definitely worth the trip to Newrybar!

Bayleef Cafe

This was my favourite breakfast spot in Byron. They do great coffee and have a great breakfast menu that is really unusual! I has a special of garlic butter fried eggs on a bed on sweet potato hotcakes with beetroot and cauliflower puree, it was so good! They close at about 3 so make sure to get in for breakfast or lunch! The image is of my dukes crusted poached eggs- amazing!!
